| Omanis are friendly and polite people. If
you are lucky enough to be invited into an Omani home, you will be offered ‘kahwa’,
a coffee-like drink flavoured with cardamom, and dates or ‘halwa’.
‘Lokhemat’ an accompaniment to the ‘kahwa’ is also eaten to offset the
bitterness of the coffee. These are cardamom flavoured balls which are deep
fried until golden then served with a sweet lime and cardamom syrup.
If you are looking to get away from the city, then a trip to the ancient
capital of Nizwa is a must. Nizwa was declared the capital of Oman during
the reign of Imam Sultan Bin Saif Al-Ya'arubi in the 6th and 7th centuries.
Nizwa Castle is nestled between luscious date palms and stands as a powerful
reminder of Nizwa's resilience throughout Oman’s long history. The most
striking feature of the castle is the circular tower that soars 115 feet
above the body of the structure.
Oman is also home to some of the world’s most amazing wadis. They come to
life with heavy rain and become lush oases of palm trees, grasses, and
flowering shrubs. Be sure to visit these wadis in groups or with a guide, as
sudden downpours can lead to dangerous flash floods.
With a coastline of 1,700 Km, Oman offers some of the cleanest, most
stunning beaches in the world – perfect for weekend picnics and barbeques.
Many coves are perfect for snorkelling and have fairly gentle shelves which
are suitable for children. The coves on the Hallaniyat Islands and the
Dimaniyyat Islands for instance, offer snorkellers the chance to see
beautifully coloured tropical fish and unusual hard and soft corals. |
