Visit Rio de Janeiro

Mention Rio to anyone and immediately the name evokes images of sultry street parades, the Sugarloaf Mountain, Corcovado Christ statue, and the ’itsy-bitsy teeny weeny’ bikinis on the beach at Ipanema. The exuberant cultural capital of Brazil is tucked between the mountains and the sea and is endowed with a natural beauty that ranges from the beaches to the mountain peaks. It also contains the biggest urban forest in the world, the Tijuca Forest, that was completely replanted during the second half of the 19th century.

Melt - 47 Rua Rita Ludolf Leblon / Rio de Janeiro

Restaurant and lounge bar popular with the Carioca high society. Inspired by New York lounge bars, it's dark and relaxed with soft sofas and cushions to Melt‚ into - so to speak. The cosmopolitan menu in the open-plan dining area combines Tex-Mex with Thai delights and apart from regular cocktails in the lunge bar the Caiparoskas are top notch - there are tasty Belgian beers to get the juices flowing too. The atmosphere heats up later on with sounds from samba to techno and trip-hop and you'll want to get close to some of the lovelies who spin their tails on the dance floor.

For most world partiers, the Brazilian Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is the Big Daddy of all the planet's celebrations. Although the modern Brazilian Carnival dating back to the 1830s was similar to the celebrations in Europe, over time it has taken on a singular life of its own. Today, the event includes lavish balls, elaborate costumes, delicious food, colorful floats and a whole lotta samba and debauchery, drawing thousands upon thousands to Rio. But what truly sets this celebration apart are the blocos, community groups of costumed musicians and dancers (many with their own hard-core devotees), who crowd the streets, encouraging onlookers to follow suit. Of course, the highlight of Carnival is the crazy Samba School Parade event that takes place in the Sambadromo with 60,000 or so live revelers, the Sunday and Monday before Fat Tuesday. While millions tune in to the live broadcast, 14 top samba schools --comprised of costumed dancers, percussionists and performers atop otherworldly floats--compete for bragging rights for best show.
